The Key is D

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_d

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids. In humans, vitamin D is unique both because it functions as a prohormone and because the body can synthesize it (as vitamin D3) when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin").

American Medical Association Adopts new policies:

“All patients regardless of race or ethnicity should use the same sun protection measures including sunscreen of at least SPF 15, avoid the sun during peak hours and regular exams,” said AMA Board Member Peter W. Carmel, M.D."

Back to Wikipedia:

Sunscreen absorbs ultraviolet light and prevents it from reaching the skin. It has been reported that sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 8 based on the UVB spectrum can decrease vitamin D synthetic capacity by 95 percent, whereas sunscreen with an SPF of 15 can reduce synthetic capacity by 98 percent (Matsuoka et al., 1987).[95]

The American Cancer Society Recommends:

Limit direct sun exposure during midday

Another way to limit exposure to UV light is to avoid being outdoors in sunlight too long. UV rays are strongest when the sun is high in the sky, usually between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. If you are unsure about the sun's intensity, use the shadow test: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun's rays are the strongest, and protection from the sun is most important.

Why, if the American Cancer Society recommends it, it must be true! Than why are there conflicting reports about this?

Time in the Sun: How Much Is Needed for Vitamin D?

In the winter, it's impossible to produce vitamin D from the sun if you live north of Atlanta because the sun never gets high enough in the sky for its ultraviolet B rays to penetrate the atmosphere. But summer is a great time to stock up on the nutrient. When the sun's UV-B rays hit the skin, a reaction takes place that enables skin cells to manufacture vitamin D.

If you're fair skinned, experts say going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun—in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen—will give you enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units of the vitamin. Dark-skinned individuals and the elderly also produce less vitamin D, and many folks don't get enough of the nutrient from dietary sources like fatty fish and fortified milk.

What does the ACS say about UV rays from the sun?

UVA rays cause cells to age and can cause some damage to cells' DNA. They are linked to long-term skin damage such as wrinkles, but are also thought to play a role in some skin cancers.

UVB rays can cause direct damage to the DNA, and are the main rays that cause sunburns. They are also thought to cause most skin cancers.

Can? Also thought? Glad to see the ACS using definitive, scientifically proven facts to save us all from the evils of UVB exposure!

Back to the USNews Report:

The sunshine vitamin may protect against a host of diseases, including osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancers of the breast, prostate, and colon. What's more, sunlight has other hidden benefits—like protecting against depression, insomnia, and an overactive immune system.

Given all the upsides of basking at least briefly in the summer sun, many experts now worry that public-health messages warning about skin cancer have gone overboard in getting people to cover up and seek the shade.

Gee...what would happen if we had a populace that sunbathed at mid-day regularly without sunscreen, and ate lots of Vitmin D rich foods like grass fed dairy, meat and poultry? Surely the rate of cancers would decline.

This cannot be allowed to happen! The profits of pharmaceutical companies producing sunscreen and cancer treatment drugs would plummet! Donations and Non-Profit funded careers for organizations like the American Cancer Society would dry up! Giant Agricultural Food manufacturers would lose out on all the cholesterol free and fat free food products they sell! This would be an unmitigated disaster across a wide variety of industries! This cannot be allowed to happen!

This is just humans taking everything to the extreme. If you're fair skinned you probably shouldn't spend 4 hours a day sunbathing and getting sun burned. The burn is your bodies way of telling you "Quit it!" but we've spent time in the sun for thousands of years. You don't need to be covered at every minute to protect from sun burn. I'll usually protect my nose cause it'll burn really badly but that's usually about it.

Heh, what's also interesting is why so many of the people on the boards of various "Cancer Foundations" are also high-ranking officers (CEO's/CFO's) of drug companies like Merck and Pfizer, who make billions each year from cancer/chemo drugs.

They certainly do like it that now more people are able to "live with cancer" without dying (guys like me), because it keeps people alive longer to buy more drugs. (Lung cancer? Meh, they die too quick to make money off of).

But, should the cure to cancer be found in something like, say, dandelions, the very people who are "dedicated to finding a cure" would lose hundreds of millions of dollars in both wages and stock value.

Don't forget, the cure to scurvy was discovered by Champlain when his boat got frozen in the Canadian waters for a winter, and the Indians brought them pine-needle tea (rich in vitamin C) and everyone with scurvy was cured. When he brought it back to Europe as the cure, the medical profession simply dismissed it. 200 or so years later, citrus high in vitamin C was "discovered" to cure scurvy. How many people needlessly died in the meantime? The limey bastards.

Every Oncologist at a Cancer hospital would also be out of work and be applying to Apu for a position at the Kwik E Mart

Conflict of Interest, anyone?

Considering the BILLIONS that EACH country in the world spends treating cancer each year, someone with a brain might just suggest a $50 Billion reward for the person/company who cures cancer. (That much will be saved in medical costs in the first year).

Nope, no conspiracy here. My tin-foil hat is sitting on the floor.

For what it's worth and I know I'm just an anonymous face on the Internet and there is no way to validate my claims but here is an interesting personal account.

I recently directed two people with throat cancer to Dr Simoncini's cancer site. With a low carb diet (high in vegetables), high doses of vitamin c and simply gargling their throats with baking soda their cancers went into complete remission (i think the docs call it spontaneous remission lol).

There seems to be so much anecdotal evidence that simple baking soda has significant cancer fighting capacities that it cannot be ignored.

HL, check out 'prostate cancer molasses and baking soda' on YouTube and prepare to be amazed.

We got our first real sun this last weekend in the great Northwest. I have been intermittently supplementing Vit D all winter (when I remember), and while I fell off the wagon for a week, and loaded up on way too much gluten, I had been really good for the last 6 months. My wife on the other hand, is fair-skinned (Norwegian) and is only half-heartedly paleo. We were out from noon to sundown on Saturday, and 10 to 3 on Sunday, no shade. I had no burning at all, and the wife had quite a bit of pink on her face. I've been working out all winter (in the past, I've only had motivation to work out once spring arrives), and I'm looking good. I'm thinking of going shirtless all summer long.

Johnycomelately,

There is a theory out there about cancer being due to fungus, which is why baking soda helps it. Not sure if it is true, and even if it is true in some, doubtful it is true in all. But an interesting theory none the less.

All these rules about being in the sun are really pretty ridiculous. Just watch your exposure. If you are burning, you are doing it wrong! (And this is coming from a guy who has had some serious (dangerous) sun burns in the past) A few minutes on face and hands isn't going to be enough, esp for the females who plaster spf make up on their faces. But the flip side of using tanning beds (very popular in the NW) or going out all day in the sun without building up to it in a reasonable fashion.

As a side note, the two types of people with the absolute ugliest skin... Women who tan (esp when too much) and roofers. Both end up with leather for skin and it is so not attractive.

Agreed..

There isn't really any natural food high in vit D, though. Except for cod liver oil maybe.

I mean if we compare the vit D content of foods to the 10000 IU from the sun, there is just too big difference.

So basically there is the cheap way (sun) and there are supplements.

Not to forget 1929 Nobel price laureate Dr.Warburg who essentially discovered the real cancer cause. His work was recently confirmed by the Erfurt University and by several other trials in Germany and other countries.

The DCA treatment looks very promising but has a big hurdle, it's cheap stuff and is simple to synthetise, not patentable. So nothing the pharma-industry could tolerate. If you look at standard chemotherapy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemotherapy#Types
you will notice that all the substances used are extremely toxic. They all work by out-poisonining the tumor before it gets the rest of the body, a bit like bombing a country to bring democracy.

Follow that trail....

I am fair complected and used to get sunburn all the time. Organic, exprelled pressed coconut oil and never a burn yet. Full sun, as much as possible.

Something is fishy.

My blog dropped to only 84 hits yesterday. I average around 800/day when posting only one article a week. When I make a post, it is 1,000 to 1,200 hits. When I abandon my blog for two years at a stretch, I still average 300-400 hits a day.

So... wtf? The Spearhead is down, HL is flagged, and my blog has gotten only 1/10th the regular traffic.

Hmmm... Rob rubs his hands together anxiously. I feel a battle might be at hand. Heh, heh.

It's like the good old days.
