I knew one of my Grandfathers a little, and wish I could have known him more, but I was pretty young when he passed away.

My father died recently, and he too was a victim of bad medicine. Not what ultimately killed him - he had a heart condition that actually could have been fairly easily fixed through surgery. As you said, surgeons can work miracles. Unfortunately, his primary care physician missed the simple diagnosis because it was so much easier to just give him drugs.

The drugs not only didn't solve the real problem, they created a bunch of other ones. But, as in your case, trust of the doctor was too high. The maddening thing was, other doctors were telling my dad the same thing I was - that he shouldn't be on the drugs he was on. But he trusted his own doctor too much, and it was too easy to just keep doing what was familiar.

In the end, he rallied for one last try, got off the wrong medication and had the surgery he needed, and he fought hard. But it was too late. The heart condition was too advanced and his system had been too ravaged by the drugs he thought he needed for so many years.

It was odd - like you and your Grandfather, I had mostly lost my dad a while before he actually passed away. But at the end there, I got him back for a little while as he made his last stand.

Some modern medications are amazing. Some are poison. We all just need to take responsibility for our health and not abdicate to a doctor. A good doctor is a partner and advisor, not a dictator.

And the world has its sorrows. But we soldier on as best we can. Good men go and leave us their burdens.Jack Amoknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4256367009985298221.post-63720071810671388562011-04-11T05:05:02.489-07:002011-04-11T05:05:02.489-07:00Horrible but, alas, probably all-too-typical story...Horrible but, alas, probably all-too-typical story.

http://mangans.blogspot.com/2009/03/dont-take-statins-if-you-need.htmlDennis Manganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16934802482968611507noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4256367009985298221.post-54429214870646632362011-04-10T18:01:49.304-07:002011-04-10T18:01:49.304-07:00I'm sorry for your loss. She kept thinking gangs and some of the neighbors were out to get her. Her doctor set her up with a psychiatrist who ended up giving her drugs which made her extremely frail. My parents moved to another city and my mother got off the drugs and did well for the last two years of her life. Her passing was fast and lasted two weeks. My dad and some of my siblings believe my mother would have probably lived another 2 years + if she didn't take any of these quack drugs she was given by the psychiatrist.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4256367009985298221.post-43181436111459837782011-04-06T15:42:58.048-07:002011-04-06T15:42:58.048-07:00Thanks to all who offered condolences...
